How to buy rudraksha

Three things tell you about a rudraksha: where it grew, whether its lines are natural, and how it was strung. Nepal beads are bigger and more deeply ridged than Indonesian ones, and they are the beads the classical texts describe. Every Shiwalay bead comes with an X-ray report that counts the seeds inside against the lines outside. It is the one test that cannot be faked.

    If you are new, start with 5 mukhi

    It suits everyone, comes with no restrictions, and is the bead the texts give for daily japa. Higher mukhis are worn for specific reasons. Talk to someone you trust before you buy one.

    Silk for wearing, silver caps for keeping

    A japa mala should have a silk knot between beads so they do not grind against each other. Pendants and single beads are capped in 925 silver so the hole does not wear.

    Bigger is not better

    A natural 5 mukhi bead is 6 to 9 mm. Very large beads are collector pieces, not better for wearing. Look at how deep the ridges are, not how wide the bead is.

Questions people ask about rudraksha

How do I know a rudraksha is genuine?
Look at the X-ray report in the box. It shows the seed chambers inside, and a real bead has as many chambers as it has mukhis. Water tests and copper-coin tests prove nothing. Be wary of beads that look too uniform, too glossy, or have lines that look carved.
Can women wear rudraksha?
Yes. No classical text restricts rudraksha by gender. Everyone should take it off when bathing in hard water and when putting on perfume.
Should the mala be energised?
A rudraksha does not need a ritual, but many families like a pran pratishtha before they first wear it. We offer it at Kashi, with a video, for ₹501 at checkout.
How many beads should a japa mala have?
108, plus the sumeru or guru bead, which is not counted. A wrist mala of 27 is for wearing: four rounds make one 108.
