Five mukhi is the rudraksha most closely tied to Shiva in his five-faced form, which is why it is the everyday choice for a japa mala. You hold it for Om Namah Shivaya, 108 beads to a round, usually in the morning after your bath. Families bring it out especially on Mondays in Sawan and through the night of Mahashivratri.

1. Chant Om Namah Shivaya, one bead per repetition, 108 times.
2. Remove before bathing and sleeping.

• Oil lightly with mustard or sandalwood oil once a month so the bead does not dry and crack.
• Keep away from soap, perfume and chemicals; remove before bathing if the water is hard.
• Store in a cotton pouch, not an airtight box; the bead needs to breathe.
• Never let the beads knock against each other in a drawer; the natural ridges chip.
