How to choose a shivling
Any sincere material can be a Shivling. The Shiva Purana lists lingams of clay, stone, crystal, metal and parad. What the material changes is your daily puja. Narmada stone and cast metal take a full abhishek of milk, honey and ghee. Sphatik and gemstone lingams take water only. Parad needs care, and its abhishek water is never drunk. So decide how you will worship first, then choose the size.

For a daily abhishek: Narmadeshwar or metal
A Narmada bana lingam is river stone shaped by the water, and it needs no installation rite. Ashtadhatu and brass take every offering and last for generations.

For a quiet corner or a study table: sphatik and stone
Clear quartz, rose quartz, tiger's eye, black agate and green stone lingams suit a quiet daily practice. Offer water only.

At home, keep it small
Tradition keeps a home Shivling between the size of your thumb and about four inches. Bigger lingams belong in temples, where a priest attends them every day.

- Which shivling is best for home?
- For most homes, a Narmadeshwar. It is formed by the river, takes a full abhishek and needs no pran pratishtha. Sphatik suits a meditation practice. Parad is held most sacred in the rasa texts but needs careful handling. Size matters more than material: keep it under four inches.
- Can we keep a shivling at home?
- Yes. Keep one, not several, in the puja room or the north-east, with the jalhari spout pointing north. Offer water daily if you can. A Shivling is not meant to be left alone for long stretches.
- How do I identify an original parad shivling?
- It feels unusually heavy for its size, looks silver-grey rather than mirror bright, and leaves no black mark on your palm or on a white cloth. The real proof is a metal assay that states the mercury content, and ours comes with one. Skip acid tests and the gold test. Parad bonds with gold and will damage your jewellery.
- Is a parad shivling safe to keep at home?
- Yes, if it is a properly solidified alloy and you handle it sensibly. Use water only for abhishek and never drink or serve that water. Do not heat or drop it, keep it away from gold and silver and from small children, and wash your hands after puja.
- Can gemstone shivlings be worshipped?
- Yes. Tradition accepts a lingam of any material offered with devotion. Use plain water for abhishek, because milk, honey and acids dull polished stone, and dry it afterwards.
- Which direction should the shivling face?
- Place it so the jalhari spout, where the water drains, points north. You then sit facing east or north.
