How to choose a shree yantra

The Shree Yantra is nine interlocking triangles around a central point, the bindu. It is the form of Lakshmi and Tripura Sundari. You can have it flat, engraved on copper or carved in wood, or raised into a pyramid called the Meru. Before anything else, check the drawing. Every triangle point should meet cleanly. If the geometry is off, the material does not matter.

    Flat or Meru

    A flat copper or wooden yantra suits a wall, a desk or a small altar. A Meru in brass or sphatik is the raised form, for a dedicated altar or a shop counter.

    The material is your choice, not a ranking

    You will hear that sphatik beats copper and copper beats brass. The texts say no such thing. Copper is traditional, brass is sturdy, sphatik is prized, wood is natural. Pick the one you will look after.

    Ask the weight, and keep it modest

    A solid 3-inch brass Meru weighs close to 480 g, so a light one is hollow. For a home, 3 to 4 inches is plenty. Larger pieces are for offices and temples.

Questions people ask about the shree yantra

Which Shree Yantra is best for home?
One that is drawn correctly and that you will actually sit in front of. A flat copper yantra is the traditional and most affordable choice. A brass or sphatik Meru suits a dedicated altar. Correct geometry and a regular practice matter more than the material.
Where should the Shree Yantra be placed?
In the puja room, or the north-east or east of your home or office, on a red or yellow cloth, at eye level when you are seated, facing east or west. Keep a Meru upright. Never put it on the floor.
What is the difference between a Shree Yantra and a Meru?
It is the same geometry. The flat yantra is drawn in two dimensions. The Meru, or Maha Meru, lifts the nine levels into a stepped pyramid with the bindu at the top.
How do I energise a Shree Yantra at home?
On a Friday, or on Diwali, Dhanteras or Akshaya Tritiya, bathe a metal yantra in water with a little milk. Wipe a wooden one with a dry cloth instead. Place it on a red cloth, offer kumkum, akshat and a flower, and recite the Lakshmi beej mantra 108 times. We can have this done at Kashi for you, with a video.
Is a wooden Shree Yantra effective?
The texts describe yantras on bhojpatra, metal, crystal and wood alike, so a wooden one is fully traditional. Keep rakta chandan or sheesham dry and never bathe it. Otherwise the practice is the same.
