Before you choose

How to choose a shree yantra

The Shree Yantra (Sri Yantra, Sri Chakra) is nine interlocking triangles around a central bindu, the geometric form of Lakshmi and Tripura Sundari. It comes flat, engraved on copper or carved in wood, or raised into a pyramid as the Meru. The first thing to check is the geometry: all triangle points must meet cleanly. A misdrawn Shree Yantra, however costly the material, is decoration.

  1. 01

    Flat or Meru

A flat copper or wooden yantra suits a wall, desk or small altar. A Meru, in brass or sphatik, is the three-dimensional form for a dedicated altar or a cash counter.

  2. 02

    Material is preference, not rank

The common ranking of sphatik above copper above brass has no basis in the texts. Copper is traditional, brass is durable, sphatik is prized, wood is natural. Choose what you will look after.

  3. 03

    Solid, and the right size

Ask the weight. A solid 3-inch brass Meru weighs close to 480 g. For a home, 3 to 4 inches is ample; larger pieces are for offices and temples.

Questions people ask about the shree yantra

Which Shree Yantra is best for home?
An accurately drawn one that you will sit in front of. A flat copper Shree Yantra is the traditional and most affordable choice; a brass or sphatik Meru suits a dedicated altar. Material matters less than correct geometry and a regular practice.
Where should the Shree Yantra be placed?
In the puja room or the north-east or east of the home or office, on a red or yellow cloth, at eye level when seated, with the yantra facing east or west. Keep a Meru with its peak upright. Never place it on the floor.
What is the difference between a Shree Yantra and a Meru?
They are the same geometry. The flat yantra is the two-dimensional form; the Meru, or Maha Meru, raises the nine levels into a stepped pyramid with the bindu at the top.
How do I energise a Shree Yantra at home?
On a Friday or on Diwali, Dhanteras or Akshaya Tritiya, bathe a metal yantra in water and a little milk (wipe wood with a dry cloth), place it on a red cloth, offer kumkum, akshat and a flower, and recite the Lakshmi beej mantra 108 times. Shiwalay can have this done at Kashi with a video.
Is a wooden Shree Yantra effective?
The texts describe yantras drawn on bhojpatra, metal, crystal and wood alike. A wooden yantra in rakta chandan or sheesham is kept dry and never bathed; otherwise the practice is the same.
