About this piece
A deity is seated on a raised chowki, never on the floor. This one is solid sheesham from Saharanpur, 30 cm square and 12 cm high, sturdy enough for a murti and a kalash together. Spread a red or yellow cloth on it and it becomes the altar for Diwali, Navratri or Ganesh Chaturthi.

Why it's traditionally used
The chowki is the low wooden seat on which a deity is installed for a puja, so that the divine sits above the ground. It is set up for Diwali's Lakshmi-Ganesh puja, Navratri's ghatasthapana and Ganesh Chaturthi.
How to use
- Place it in the north-east or east, spread a clean red or yellow cloth, then seat the deity.
- Keep liquids on a plate, not directly on the wood.
- Dust with a dry cloth and oil the wood once a season.
Care
- Dust weekly with a dry cloth; oil once a season with a drop of coconut or teak oil on a cloth.
- Keep away from damp walls and direct sun, which warp and fade wood.
- Wipe spills at once; standing water leaves white marks.
