The weight matters more than the pattern. A diya under 60 grams tips over when a child walks past the mandir.

About this piece

The daily lamp should sit still on the altar, and at 120 g this one does. It is cast solid in Moradabad, 7 cm across, and holds heat evenly. Fill it with ghee or oil, add a cotton wick, and it burns for about forty minutes on one filling. Ten cotton wicks come in the box to get you started.

Why it's traditionally used

Lighting the diya is the first act of the daily puja, and the flame is offered to the deity as light. A ghee or sesame oil lamp is lit at dawn or dusk, and at Dhanteras and Diwali rows of diyas are lit for Lakshmi across the home.

How to use
  1. Fill two-thirds with ghee or sesame oil, set a cotton wick at the lip, and light.
  2. Wipe out soot with a dry cloth; polish monthly with tamarind or pitambari.
Care
  • Wipe dry after every aarti; water spots become tarnish within a day.
  • Clean monthly with pitambari or tamarind pulp, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Keep lacquered pieces away from flame and abrasives; the coating is what keeps them bright.
In the box
  • Brass diya
  • Cotton wicks, pack of 10
