About this piece

A Shivling (Shivlinga, Shiva lingam) cast in ashtadhatu, the eight-metal alloy the shilpa texts prescribe for temple images, in one piece with its jalhari (yoni base) and spout. Metal is the right material if you perform abhishek every day: it takes water, milk, honey and ghee without staining, and it will outlast the family that buys it. Modern ashtadhatu is copper-and-zinc led with the remaining metals in small proportions; the foundry's composition note is in the box.
