Why it's traditionally used
The tortoise recalls Kurma, the form Vishnu took to hold up the mountain during the churning of the ocean, and Vastu tradition keeps one at home for stability and long life. It sits in a plate of water in the north or north-east, turned to face east. Families usually set it down as part of a griha pravesh.
How to use
- Place in the north or north-east, facing east.
Care
- Wipe dry after every aarti; water spots become tarnish within a day.
- Clean monthly with pitambari or tamarind pulp, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth.
- Keep lacquered pieces away from flame and abrasives; the coating is what keeps them bright.
