7-Day Career Ritual

Seven sunrises with Surya: water offered to the rising sun, his twelve names, and one deliberate act for your work each day.

The spirit of this practiceSurya rises every day for everyone and asks nothing back. The spirit of this practice is to offer your work the same way: fully, on time, as a service rather than for the credit.

Your progress is saved to your account. Your notebook lines stay on this phone only. A missed day never resets the count.

A week-long version of the 21-Day Career Ritual: the sunrise arghya and Surya's twelve names each morning, and five practical acts for your work. Clear the desk, face the postponed task, learn, ask for feedback, thank a teacher.

It won't hand you a promotion. It's a week of the steadiness that careers are built on.

A reminder every day, in your own calendar

The same time each day is most of the practice. Choose yours; the reminder repeats for 7 days and opens today's step.

The daily routine

About 12 minutes, the same every day.

  1. 1

    Rise before the sun

Bathe if you can; wash your face and hands at least. Aim to be outside or at an east-facing window as the sun comes up.

  2. 2

    Prepare the water

Fill the copper lota with clean water. Add a pinch of red chandan or kumkum, a few grains of rice and the flower.

  3. 3

    Offer the arghya

Face east, hold the lota at chest height with both hands, and pour the water in a slow, steady stream. Look at the sun through the falling water, never directly at the sun.

  4. 4

    The twelve names

With folded hands, say the twelve names of Surya: Om Mitraya Namah, Om Ravaye Namah, Om Suryaya Namah, Om Bhanave Namah, Om Khagaya Namah, Om Pushne Namah, Om Hiranyagarbhaya Namah, Om Marichaye Namah, Om Adityaya Namah, Om Savitre Namah, Om Arkaya Namah, Om Bhaskaraya Namah.

  5. 5

    Japa

One round of Om Suryaya Namah on the mala, 108 times, at an unhurried pace.

  6. 6

    Write the one task

In the notebook, dated: the single most important thing you will do for your work today. One line.

  7. 7

    The day's act

Read today's note below and do it, or fix the time you'll do it.

Day by day

01Begin

Say the sankalp with water in your right palm, then offer it with the arghya. Write the one thing about your work you most want to change this week.

02Clear the deskOpens day by day once you begin
03The postponed taskOpens day by day once you begin
04Twenty minutes of learningOpens day by day once you begin
05Ask for honest feedbackOpens day by day once you begin
06Thank a teacherOpens day by day once you begin
07CloseOpens day by day once you begin

Closing, on the last day

  1. Thanks. Offer the arghya, then say aloud what you did this week, from the notebook.
  2. Offering. Jaggery and a red flower.
  3. Next. Keep the sunrise arghya and the one-task line, or begin the 21-Day Career Ritual.

The rules

  • As close to sunrise as your life allows, at the same time each day.
  • Never look straight at the sun. Watch it through the falling water.
  • A missed day doesn't break the ritual. Continue the next morning.

Quick answers

Should I do the 7-day or the 21-day ritual?

Seven days is a good start if you're new to a daily practice. The 21-day ritual takes the same routine further, with sixteen more acts for your work.

Will it get me a job or a promotion?

It doesn't promise that. It builds daily discipline and clarity, the habits the tradition associates with Surya.

A practice of attention and order. Nothing here promises an outcome.
