Tip a lota before you buy it. If the water comes out in a wide splash, the lip is wrong for abhishek. An abhishek wants a thin, steady stream.
This is the vessel you reach for every morning: water for the Shivling, arghya to the rising sun, a little jal before any puja begins. It is hand-beaten from pure copper in Moradabad and holds 500 ml, with a lip shaped to pour a thin, steady stream, which is what an abhishek asks for.
The lota is the oldest vessel of Indian worship: water poured from it over the Shivling is the abhishek, and water poured from it to the rising sun is Surya's arghya. Copper is the traditional metal for both, and many homes keep one lota only for the altar, used every morning and on Mondays, Pradosh and Mahashivratri.
