7-Day Gratitude Ritual
Seven mornings at your family altar: a lamp, a prayer for everyone's wellbeing, and one person thanked aloud each day.
The spirit of this practiceEvery offering at the altar says: this was given to me. The spirit of this practice is to see how much of your life is a gift, and to thank the people who gave it.
Your progress is saved to your account. Your notebook lines stay on this phone only. A missed day never resets the count.
A week-long version of the 21-Day Gratitude Ritual: a lamp and a prayer each morning, one line of thanks, and five people or gifts thanked aloud. Your mother, a teacher, the one who cooks, someone who serves you, and a letter written by hand.
It's the simplest of the rituals, and a lovely one to give as a gift.
A reminder every day, in your own calendar
The same time each day is most of the practice. Choose yours; the reminder repeats for 7 days and opens today's step.
The daily routine
About 10 minutes, the same every day.
- 1
Light the lamp
At your family altar, with a flower and an agarbatti. Sit for three breaths.
- 2
The prayer
Say once, slowly: Om sarve bhavantu sukhinah, sarve santu niramayah, sarve bhadrani pashyantu, ma kashchid duhkhabhag bhavet. May all be happy, may all be free from illness, may all see what is good, may no one suffer.
- 3
One line of thanks
In the notebook, dated: one specific thing you were given yesterday.
- 4
Today's thanks
Read today's note below. Thank that person or gift aloud, today, in person or by phone if you can.
Day by day
01Begin
Say the sankalp. List seven people who shaped your life. You'll thank some of them this week.
Closing, on the last day
- Together. Light the lamp with your family. Each person says aloud one thing they're grateful for.
- Offering. A sweet as prasad, shared at the table.
- Next. Keep the line of thanks each morning, or begin the 21-Day Gratitude Ritual.
The rules
- Thanks said aloud counts more than thanks written. Do both when you can.
- Be specific about what you're thanking someone for.
- A missed day doesn't break the ritual. Continue the next morning.
Quick answers
Should I do the 7-day or the 21-day ritual?
Seven days is a lovely introduction, and an easy gift. The 21-day ritual thanks twenty people and gifts, from ancestors to strangers.
Which deity is it for?
Your own family deity, or whoever you pray to.
A practice of attention and order. Nothing here promises an outcome.
