The test that matters is the ash. A true masala stick leaves soft grey ash and no black char, and ours does because there is no charcoal in the mix.

About this piece

Light one stick and watch the ash. It should fall soft and grey, not black. These are masala sticks rolled in Mysore from sandalwood powder bound with halmaddi resin, with no charcoal and no synthetic perfume. Each 23 cm stick burns for 45 minutes with a low, clean smoke, and a box holds 60.
