From the Shiwalay desk
Right-turning conches are rare and often faked with a mirror. We photograph the aperture so you can see the spiral for yourself.
About this piece
Look into the aperture and the spiral turns to the right, which is what makes a dakshinavarti rare. This conch from Rameswaram is verified as a natural dakshinavarti and photographed before dispatch. It is kept on the altar as a Lakshmi shankh, not blown, and sits on a silver-plated stand. A verification photo card comes in the box.

Why it's traditionally used
Tradition holds that the shankh rose from the churning of the ocean along with Lakshmi, and the rare right-turning dakshinavarti is kept as her shankh. It is worshipped on the altar rather than blown, filled with water during puja and the water sprinkled afterwards. Families set it beside Lakshmi at Diwali and on Akshaya Tritiya.
How to use
- Fill with water during puja and sprinkle afterwards.
Care
- Store in the pouch provided with the anti-tarnish strip; air and humidity darken silver.
- Clean with a silver cloth, not liquid dips, which strip fine detail.
- Keep away from kumkum, sindoor and sulphur-rich foods during puja; wipe at once if touched.
- Rinse with clean water after use and dry completely; do not soak.
- Store on its stand, mouth down, so moisture drains.
