Bell brass rings longer than ordinary brass. Hold it by the handle and strike once to hear the difference.
Ring it once as the aarti begins and the note carries after your hand is still. It is cast in Moradabad from bell brass, which gives a longer, cleaner ring than ordinary brass, and Nandi sits on the handle. It stands 16 cm high with a 7 cm bell.
The ghanti is rung at the start of puja to invite the deity's presence, and again at aarti while the lamp is circled. Nandi on the handle marks it for Shiva worship, since Nandi is Shiva's mount and the gatekeeper devotees greet before entering the shrine. Families ring it through the daily Shiva puja and during abhishek on Mondays and Mahashivratri.
