Dhanteras is the thirteenth day of the dark half of Kartik, Friday 6 November 2026, and the first of the five days of Diwali. Two things happened on this tithi in the tradition: Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, rose from the churning of the ocean with the pot of amrit, and a king's son was saved from death by a wall of lamps and ornaments. From the first comes the puja for health and wealth; from the second, the buying of metal and the lamp lit for Yama at the door.
It is India's largest single day for buying gold, silver and utensils. A household observance needs only a new metal object, however small, a diya at the threshold after sunset, and a short puja.
When
- Buying can be done all day; the panchang's Trayodashi tithi in 2026 runs through the daylight hours of 6 November.
- The Dhanteras puja is done in the Pradosh kaal, the roughly two and a half hours after sunset, about 6 to 8.30 pm in most cities. The panchang also gives a shorter Vrishabha lagna window within it, preferred by those who follow lagna.
- The Yamadeep is lit at dusk, before the main puja, and left burning through the night if it can be watched.

What to buy, and what it means
The purchase is symbolic: metal is brought into the house as a sign that Lakshmi has entered. A copper kalash, a brass diya, a silver coin with Lakshmi's image, a pair of silver anklets, a steel or brass utensil for the kitchen, or gold if the year allows. The value is not the point; a single new spoon counts.
Copper and brass are the traditional choices for a puja room and hold their meaning longest. Silver is preferred for coins and small murtis. Whatever you buy, bring it home unwrapped, place it on the chowki for the evening puja, and use it in the house afterwards rather than leaving it in a cupboard.
Traditional lists also warn against buying certain things on Dhanteras: iron, glass, black items, sharp objects. These are customs rather than rules, and families follow them to varying degrees.
Dusk: the Yamadeep
- 1
Prepare
A clay or metal diya with mustard oil and a cotton wick. A four-faced diya is traditional in some regions; a simple one is fine.
- 2
Place
Outside the main door, on the right as you leave, on a small heap of rice or wheat, facing south. This is the one time in the year a lamp is set facing south; it is for Yama, who rules that direction.
- 3
Light and pray
Light it at dusk with a short prayer that no untimely death visit the home in the year. The women of the house traditionally light it.
- 4
Leave it
It burns through the evening. Do not move it or use it for anything else.
Evening: the puja
- 5
Set the chowki
A red or yellow cloth. Lakshmi and Ganesha in the centre, Dhanvantari's image beside them, the new metal object in front, a kalash with water to one side. Kuber's image or yantra in the north.
- 6
Ganesha first
Tilak, flowers, a sweet, and a short prayer for the puja to proceed without obstacle.
- 7
Dhanvantari
Offer water, tilak and flowers, and pray for the family's health. The Dhanvantari mantra is short; reading a line about his rising from the ocean serves equally.
- 8
Lakshmi and Kuber
Kumkum, akshat, flowers, the sweets and the coin. Light the ghee diya. Recite the Lakshmi names you know, or the Shri Sukta if the family reads it.
- 9
The new metal
Apply tilak and a flower to what you bought. It is now the family's, blessed.
- 10
Aarti
Camphor aarti for all the deities, then the sweets distributed as prasad. Light diyas around the home and at the windows.
The days that follow
Dhanteras opens five days: Naraka Chaturdashi on the 7th (the oil bath before dawn and the diyas for the departed), Lakshmi puja on Diwali on the 8th, Govardhan on the 9th and Bhai Dooj on the 10th. The Dhanteras purchase stays on the chowki through Lakshmi puja, when it receives its second blessing.
What usually goes wrong
- Buying something you will never use so as to have bought something. A kitchen utensil you cook with tomorrow honours the day better.
- Lighting the Yamadeep inside or facing any direction but south. It belongs outside the door.
- Doing the puja in the morning. Dhanteras is a Pradosh observance; the evening is the time.
- Treating the day as a shopping event only. Five minutes at the chowki is what makes it Dhanteras.
Quick answers
What should I buy on Dhanteras if I cannot afford gold?
Copper or brass for the puja room, a silver coin, or any new utensil for the kitchen. The purchase is a sign of welcome to Lakshmi, not a measure of wealth. A brass diya that you will light every evening is a better purchase than a gold coin left in a locker.
What is the Dhanteras puja muhurat in 2026?
The Pradosh kaal after sunset on 6 November, roughly 6 to 8.30 pm depending on the city. Within it, the panchang lists a Vrishabha lagna window of about two hours that many families prefer. The daily WhatsApp message gives the time for your city.
Why is a lamp lit for Yama on Dhanteras?
The story tells of a prince fated to die of a snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage; his wife kept him awake all night with songs and stories, surrounded by lamps and heaped ornaments, and Yama, dazzled, left without him. The lamp at the door on Dhanteras recalls it and asks for the household's protection from untimely death.
Can Dhanteras puja be done without a Dhanvantari image?
Yes. Most homes have Lakshmi and Ganesha and pray to Dhanvantari by name. His image is a recent addition to household chowkis; the prayer for health is what matters.
Should the Dhanteras purchase be used or kept?
Used. Utensils go to the kitchen after Diwali, a diya is lit daily, a kalash is used in the next puja. Items kept unused lose the point of the custom, which is to bring something living into the home.
