From the Shiwalay desk

Dhoop smoulders for a long time and the base gets hot. Choose a dani with a long handle and a bowl that sits off the shelf, and your altar cloth will thank you.

About this piece

Dhoop needs somewhere safe to smoulder. This brass dhoop dani has a shallow bowl on a raised foot that holds a dhoop cup, a cone or a little loban, and a long handle, so you can carry the fragrance around the altar and through the rooms at evening aarti, as many families do. It is made in Moradabad.

Why it's traditionally used

Dhoop is one of the sixteen traditional offerings of a puja, the fragrance offered after the flowers and before the lamp. Many families carry the smouldering dhoop around the altar and through every room at the evening aarti, and a dhoop dani with a handle is made for exactly that.

How to use
  1. Place a dhoop cup or cone in the bowl, light the tip, and let the flame go out so it smoulders.
  2. Carry it by the handle around the altar and through the house during the evening aarti.
  3. Once it has cooled, tip out the ash and wipe the bowl; polish monthly with tamarind or pitambari.
Care
  • Wipe dry after every aarti; water spots become tarnish within a day.
  • Clean monthly with pitambari or tamarind pulp, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Keep lacquered pieces away from flame and abrasives; the coating is what keeps them bright.
