Good dhoop leaves a soft grey ash and a fragrance that lingers after it's out. If the ash is black and the smoke stings your eyes, there's charcoal in it.
Dhoop is thicker and slower than agarbatti, with no bamboo core, so all of it is fragrance. These are made to our brief with no charcoal, in three traditional fragrances: guggal, the resin most used in Shiva puja; chandan, sandalwood; and loban, the sweet benzoin many homes burn at evening aarti. There are 40 sticks in a box.
Dhoop is one of the sixteen traditional offerings of a puja, the fragrance offered after the flowers and before the lamp. Guggal is especially offered to Shiva, and many families carry smouldering dhoop through the house at the evening aarti.
