Real turmeric stains your fingertip yellow and smells earthy. If it smells of nothing, it has sat too long.
Haldi is the first colour of Indian worship. In many homes a small Ganesha is shaped from turmeric paste before a puja begins, the Devi is offered haldi with kumkum, and a wedding opens with it. This is pure turmeric, finely ground for puja, 100 g in a jar. It is packed for puja use, not for the kitchen.
Turmeric is the most auspicious colour of Indian worship. A small Ganesha shaped from haldi paste begins many pujas, haldi is offered to the Devi with kumkum, and the haldi ceremony opens a wedding. Like kumkum, it is offered to Ganesha, Lakshmi and the Devi, not on the Shivling.
