Rub a pinch between your fingers. Good kumkum is soft and even, with no grit and no shine.
Kumkum begins as turmeric: when turmeric meets a little slaked lime, it turns the deep red every household knows. Ours is made that traditional way and finely milled, so a dot sits cleanly on the deity or on your forehead. It comes in a 50 g jar with a lid that keeps it dry.
Kumkum is the red of the Devi and of marriage. It is offered to Durga, Lakshmi and Ganesha, applied as a tilak before any puja, and shared as haldi-kumkum when women visit each other's homes in Navratri and Shravan. By tradition it is not offered on the Shivling.
