Lamp oil should burn with a still flame and leave little soot on the brass. That is the test to hold any lamp oil to, including ours.
Most South Indian homes light the evening lamp with til oil, and many families across India keep a til lamp for Saturdays and for Hanuman. This is cold-pressed sesame oil, bottled for the lamp, and 500 ml keeps a small diya going for many weeks of evenings. It is for lamps and puja only, not for cooking.
Sesame oil is the traditional lamp oil of the South and of the Saturday and Hanuman lamps: the evening lamp in a kuthu vilakku, the Saturday lamp for Shani, the lamp lit before Hanuman on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Many homes keep ghee for the aarti and til oil for the lamps that burn longer.
