7-Day Peace Ritual

Seven days with Shiva: water poured slowly on the Shivling, Om Namah Shivaya, five minutes of stillness, and one thing let go each day.

The spirit of this practiceWater poured on the Shivling is a letting go. The spirit of this practice is to offer up what you hold too tightly, and to sit for a few minutes with nothing to prove.

Your progress is saved to your account. Your notebook lines stay on this phone only. A missed day never resets the count.

A week-long version of the 21-Day Peace Ritual: fifteen minutes each day of water, mantra and stillness with Shiva, and five small acts that remove some noise from your life. The first hour without the phone, a quiet walk, a cleared drawer, a meal in silence, an earlier night.

It is a practice, not a cure. If you are struggling, please also talk to someone you trust or a professional.

A reminder every day, in your own calendar

The same time each day is most of the practice. Choose yours; the reminder repeats for 7 days and opens today's step.

The daily routine

About 15 minutes, the same every day.

  1. 1

    Sit down

On the aasan, at the same time every day, morning or evening. Phone on silent and out of reach.

  2. 2

    Light the lamp

One wick. Three slow breaths, each out-breath longer than the in-breath.

  3. 3

    Pour the water

Pour water from the lota over the Shivling in the slowest stream you can, for about a minute. Watch only the water. On a picture, sprinkle water with a flower.

  4. 4

    The mantra

Om Namah Shivaya, 108 times on the rudraksha mala. Slowly; the pace is the practice.

  5. 5

    Five minutes of stillness

Put the mala down. Sit with eyes closed, counting breaths from one to ten and starting again. When the mind wanders, begin again at one.

  6. 6

    Write one line

In the notebook: the one thing you let go of today, or will.

Day by day

01Begin

Say the sankalp with water in your palm and pour it on the Shivling. Write the one thing that most disturbs your peace right now.

Closing, on the last day

  1. Abhishek. Water, milk and water again, poured slowly while chanting Om Namah Shivaya.
  2. Sit. Ten minutes of stillness.
  3. Next. Keep the five minutes of stillness each day, or begin the 21-Day Peace Ritual.

The rules

  • Same time each day, morning or evening.
  • Phone out of reach for the fifteen minutes.
  • Sphatik, gemstone and parad Shivlings take water only.

Quick answers

Should I do the 7-day or the 21-day ritual?

Seven days is a gentle start. The 21-day ritual goes further, with a day without news, longer stillness and letters of forgiveness.

Is this a treatment for anxiety?

No. It's a devotional practice of stillness. If you're struggling, please speak to a doctor or counsellor.

Ready for more? 21-Day Peace Ritual

A practice of attention and order. Nothing here promises an outcome.
