A bel patra with a leaflet missing is not offered, so check that the leaves are whole. We pack them flat between card so all three leaflets stay together in transit.
Fresh bel is hard to find in a city on a Monday morning, and the tradition allows for that: bel patra is held never to go stale, so a dried leaf may be offered, and even washed and offered again. These are whole three-leaf stems, sun-dried and packed flat so the leaflets stay together, 108 to a pack. That is enough for a month of Mondays, or for one Mahashivratri night.
Bel patra is the leaf most dear to Shiva. Its three leaflets are read as his three eyes or as the trident, and it is offered on the Shivling at every Shiva puja, most of all on Mondays, at Pradosh, through the month of Shravan and on the night of Mahashivratri.
