A loose wick smokes and a tight one starves the flame. Roll one between your fingers: it should spring back, not fall open.
The wick decides how a lamp burns. These are pure cotton, hand-rolled and twisted firm, so they draw ghee or oil evenly and hold a steady flame. Choose phool batti, the small round wicks that stand in a diya, or lambi batti, the long wicks for a deep lamp or a kuthu vilakku. There are 200 in a pack.
The lamp is the one offering present at every puja, and tradition asks for its wick to be pure cotton. Round phool batti burn in the daily diya before the family deity, and long wicks in the deep lamps kept burning through Diwali and Karthigai.
